Art + Design Senior Exhibition Opens November 29th

In late November, the Ashland University Coburn Gallery will host the Senior Art Exhibition that features the capstone experience for graduating art and design majors at AU.
Bringing together the artwork made by graduating seniors in the Department of Art and Design, the Fall 2018 Senior Art Exhibition will open on Thursday, Nov. 29, with an opening reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Coburn Art Gallery located in the Center for the Arts on the Ashland University campus.
“While the 2018 Senior Art Exhibition provides the capstone experience for graduating art majors, it represents more than just students’ studio art experiences,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “For these students of the liberal arts, the exhibition is the culmination of their undergraduate careers at Ashland University.”
This year’s exhibition, which will run from Nov. 29 through Dec. 16, includes digital art, painting, printmaking, graphic design and sculpture from three Senior Art Exhibition artists - Samantha Rhonemus, Ellyn Kilpatrick and Zula Kile.

Ellyn Kilpatrick, from Rocky River, Ohio, will be graduating this December with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Fine Arts concentration and a minor in Art History. The youngest daughter of Russell and Pamela Kilpatrick, she is a part of the theatre academic honorary, Alpha Psi Omega, as well as a part of International Club and Art Club. Kilpatrick has exhibited work in two Juried Student Art Exhibitions and was the featured artist at Clague Playhouse in May 2018. After graduation, she plans to move to South Korea where she intends to continues her education and tutor English.
Samantha Rhonemus, from Bluffton, Ohio, will be graduating in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Commercial Art. The youngest daughter of Michael and Tenna Rhonemus, she is part of the sorority Theta Phi Alpha and Art Club, were she has held numerous positions like vice president, treasurer, and apparel chair in both organizations. Rhonemus has exhibited work in four Juried Student Art Exhibitions where she was awarded The Best in Show Award, as well the 3-D Award. She also was featured in the M.A.D.E in Ashland Art Exhibition, and was a finalist in the Photographer’s Forum where she was published in the annual book that is produced. After graduation, she plans to find a job that can lead to her owning her own business someday, where she can create personalized art and continue her love for photography.
Zula Marie Kile will be graduating from Ashland University with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art, with a concentration in Painting and minor concentration in Digital Art and a minor in Philosophy. She was born in the village of San Pedro Columbia, Belize; and her artwork features scenes from her tropical home. She is a member of the Art Club, Philosophy Club and Phi Sigma Tau, the Philosophy Honor Society. After graduation, she intends to return to her native country.

Art + Design Department Professional Instructors Exhibit Art

Ashland University Art + Design Department Professional Instructor Michael Bird had his work selected for BLACKOUT: A NATIONAL EXHIBITION at the Ashton Gallery, San Diego, CA. This exhibition features selected artists from across the country that work with the color black. Exhibit Dates: OCTOBER 27 - NOVEMBER 17.


Cynthia Petry Art + Design Department Professional Instructor and Coburn Gallery Director had her mixed media artwork titled Blackness and Whiteness selected for the 6th annual International 2018 FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social and Politically Engaged Art at the Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University. The exhibition will be on display from October 8 to December 14, 2018. Jurors were Cheryl Goldsleger and Larry Millard.

Professor Roggenkamp & Art Ed Alumnus Exhibit Works

Priscilla Roggenkamp- Associate Professor of Art has had three works selected for the exhibition, Art Educators As Artist.  The exhibition will be held at the Riffe Gallery, the Ohio Arts Council Gallery, in Columbus from Nov 1st through January 5th.  Of the 46 artist who have been chosen, one is a former Ashland University art education student, Erica Kenny.  Erica is currently teaching art at Eastern High School.

AU Art + Design Students serve as jurors for the 2018 Congressional Art Competition


Ashland University Art + Design Students served as jurors for the 2018 Congressional Art Competition through the 7th District with Congressman Bob Gibbs. 
The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in the 7th congressional district. The artists of the top ten submissions will be invited to a reception at Ashland University on April 30th from 5pm-7pm. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.

2018 Senior Exhibition Awards Announced

Rachael Santee-Outstanding Senior Art Exhibition Award & 
Co-Honorable Mention Award Winners -Keeleigh Myers & Alex Roddy.


Rachael Santee of Columbus, Ohio, will be graduating from Ashland University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts concentrating in Printmaking and Painting, with a minor in Art History. Santee is the oldest child of Robert and Rita Santee, also of Columbus. During her time at Ashland University, Santee has had work accepted to the Juried Student Art Exhibition during each of the four years of her attendance. She was awarded the Drawing Award her freshman year, the Printmaking and Bernini Awards her junior year, and received the Best In Show Award her senior year. After graduation, Santee plans to work toward expanding her art portfolio for graduate school in order to teach art at the college level. She also plans on one day running her own gallery and making art for the rest of her life.


Keeleigh Myers, originally from Sandusky, Ohio, will be graduating from Ashland University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Concentrative Major in Painting, Concentrative Minor in Printmaking, and minors in Art History and Marketing. Myers is the youngest daughter of Tana and Phillip Myers of Sandusky. During her collegiate years in Ashland, Myers was given the opportunity to work in The Coburn Gallery as a gallery assistant as well as tutor of Art History to fellow students through Ashland University’s Library tutoring services. Furthermore, Myers participated and held several executive positions such as Academic Excellence Chair in the Delta Delta Chapter of Theta Phi Alpha Sorority, Vice President of Ashland University’s Women’s Chorus, and Public Relations chair of Ashland University’s Art Club. Myers has exhibited various artworks in the Juried Student Art shows, the most recent exhibition titled “Dear Dr. Seuss” at The Coburn Gallery and her most recent works at URCA (Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity). She was awarded the Painting Award in the 2017 Juried Student Art Show for her encaustic paintings and the Printmaking Award 2018 Juried Student Art Show for her prints. Myers plans on furthering her education in graduate school to pursue her passions of art and inspiring others.


Alex Roddy of Mount Liberty, Ohio, will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design. She is the eldest daughter of Andrea and Matthew Roddy. During her attendance at Ashland, she has participated in the Art Club, interned at Bookmasters, exhibited in the Juried Student Art Exhibition, and was awarded the Alumni "Wink" Award in both 2017 and 2018. Roddy plans to stay in the central Ohio area and work toward a career in graphic design and illustration.

Coming up on April 12th- Ashland University Art +Design Senior Exhibition. Each spring, the Ashland University Coburn Gallery hosts the Senior Art Exhibition that features the capstone experience for graduating art majors.
Bringing together artwork made by graduating seniors in the Department of Art + Design, the 2018 Senior Art Exhibition will open on Thursday, April 12, with an opening reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Coburn Art Gallery located in the Center for the Arts on the Ashland University campus. The senior art awards will be announced at 5:30 p.m. at the April 12 reception.

This year’s exhibitions will run from April 12 through May 5 and includes projects in graphic design, digital art, painting, ceramics and printmaking by AU seniors Rachael Santee, Keeleigh Myers, Alex Roddy, Rebekah Hale, Christy Witte and Deveraux Diaz.

Devereaux Diaz lives in North Canton, Ohio, and will graduate with a Bachelor of Science with a Commercial Art major. She is a graduate of GlenOak High School. At Ashland University, she is a member of the Art Club and the Anime Club. Diaz has had the opportunity to study at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for a year, where her focus was in media art. She has served as a graphic design intern at Champion Pump where she assisted in marketing design. After graduation, Diaz plans to pursue a career in Graphic Design and Illustration starting in Columbus Ohio, gaining enough experience and skill to branch out independently.
Christy Witte of Fairlawn, Ohio, will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a minor in Marketing. She is the daughter of Brian and Sheri Witte. At her time at Ashland, she was a member of the Anime Club. During the summer before her senior year, she was an intern at the Paper Mill Studios in Akron, Ohio, where she assisted the owner of the company in designing various invitations and cards. After graduation, Witte hopes to secure a career as a designer or as an advertising marketer in Ohio, but is willing to work wherever she is needed to expand her knowledge in the art or marketing field.
Rebekah Hale, daughter of Daniel and the late Tamara Hale, has lived in Ashland, Ohio, her whole life. She will be graduating in December of 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education while concentrating in ceramics. During her time at Ashland University, she has been involved in Art Club and received The Art Club Award with several other students in the 2017 student juried art exhibition. She intends to stay in Ohio to teach where she can inspire children to create art that can help them discover and embrace their own creativity and Hale believes that art is something that can change the world.

2018 Juried Student Art Exhibition Awards

The award winners have been announced for the Ashland University 2018 Juried Student Art Exhibition which will run through April 8 in the University’s Coburn Gallery.
This exhibition offers $1,000 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Bernini Award, Dean’s Award, People’s Choice Award and awards in each of the six art areas: painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital art, graphic design and drawing. The awards were announced at the opening reception of the exhibition on March 15, 2018. The People’s Choice award will be announced on the Coburn Gallery’s Facebook page on March 26, 2018.
The outside juror for exhibition was Stephanie Craig. Craig is an Assistant Professor at Cuyahoga Community College Western Campus, where she teaches ceramics, 3D foundation and sculpture classes and is also the co-director of the campus art gallery. Craig accepted 52 entries of the 111 art entries submitted.

2018 Juried Student Art Exhibition Opens March 15th


The Ashland University Juried Student Art Exhibition opens on Thursday, March 15, in the Coburn Gallery with a reception to be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
 This exhibition will offer $1000 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Bernini Award, Dean’s Award, People’s Choice Award and awards in each of the six art areas: painting, printmaking, 3-D arts, digital art & design, and drawing. The awards ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The annual exhibition represents a culmination of student work from university art classes during the school year. It is an opportunity for art students to take their best artwork from the year, learn how to professionally present it for display, and then receive feedback from an outside art professional.

The outside juror for exhibition was Stephanie Craig. Craig is an Assistant Professor at Cuyahoga Community College Western Campus, where she teaches ceramics, 3D foundation and sculpture classes and is also the co-director of the campus art gallery. 
The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to support the arts by purchasing a student artwork, whether you are just starting to collect art or adding to a collection.
The exhibition runs from March 15-April 8, 2018. A generous donation from Dr. Wendy and Scott Schaller, Dr. Dawn Weber and other private donors has allowed the University to offer several of these awards.
