AU Alumni to present seminar at Akron Art Museum

Ashland University Art Department Alumni Charlie Wagers will present a seminar on screen printing at the Akron Art Museum on January 16, 2014. The presentation is part of the museum’s current  exhibition, “Multiplicity: Contemporary Prints from the Smithsonian American Art Museum.”  Wagers will discuss his favorite prints in the exhibition and introduce museum goers to the print-making processes.

Wagers, a 2009 graduate from AU’s Commercial Art program, is currently the senior designer and co-founder of Three Bears Design.  His work includes websites, album covers, concert and event posters and more. His client list is varied and includes Proctor & Gamble, Six Flags Amusement Park, and Tooth and Nail Records. He has been recognized by CMYK Magazine, UnderConsideration LLC, Lomography, and the American Advertising Federation.  While a student, he was awarded best in both the Drawing and Digital Art/Photography categories in the 2007 Juried Student Event at the Coburn Gallery.

Photography Class Takes Field Trip to Mansfield Reformatory

On Nov. 20, students from Photography (Art 204) took a photo shoot field trip to the Mansfield Reformatory.  Here are some of the student shots that capture the beautiful architecture, late day light, and wonderful textures from this place. This is the fourth year for the trip says instructor, Jessica Wascak, and it's always a great time.

Senior Art Exhibition Opens December 3 in Coburn Gallery

This December’s Senior Art Exhibition will feature the digital art work of Ana Timan Reynolds, Fine Arts major; and the ceramics of Sarah Toby, who is double majoring in Art Education and a Fine Arts (BFA). The senior art exhibition runs from December 3- 14 in the Coburn Art Gallery, with an opening reception on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.

Held each December, the Senior Art Exhibition is the capstone experience for graduating art majors. Both our featured artists were award winners in last spring’s Juried Student Art Exhibition. Toby was presented the Ceramics Award for her piece “Forget Me Not;” and Reynolds’ digital print “Traveler" was awarded Best of Show. Reynolds was also presented with Ashland University’s Art Department Junior of the Year Award in 2012.

The Coburn Gallery is located in the Center for the Arts Building on the Ashland University campus. Undergraduate Research & Creative Activity Symposium call for abstracts

The College of Arts and Sciences includes students in more than 50 different majors.  The URCA Symposium is a great way to highlight this diversity.  

The Fifth Annual College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1, 2014. This yearly event highlights the variety of research, scholarly and creative activities of students throughout the College of Arts and Sciences.  

Participation is open to all students who are declared majors in a program within the College of Arts and Sciences. Students may choose to give an oral presentation, poster presentation, exhibition, or a performance.  

To participate, students must submit an abstract with faculty sponsorship.  The deadline for submitting abstracts is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2014.

Student art work to be part of "Symposium Against Indifference" event on Thursday, November 14

Digital art created by our students will be part of Thursday evening's multimedia literary experience, "Sensing Literature from Latin America and the Caribbean." 

Using collective multimedia performances, AU students will interpret the sounds, atmospheres and realities created in literary masterpieces.  Lighting, photography, film and art combine to create sensorial experiences of literature intended to bridge the gap imposed by language and cultural difference.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about the history of Latin America and its quest for cultural identity and freedom through a contemporary interpretation of literature and art.

 The event begins at 7:00 p.m. (Thursday, November 14, 2013 in the Trustees Room (upper convo).  It is one of a variety of events in the university's current Symposium Against Indifference: "Engaging Latin American and the Caribbean."

Students enjoy trip to Pittsburgh

Thanks to all the students and chaperones that made our November 9 trip to Pittsburgh a success. Students enjoyed visiting the Carnegie Museum of Art for their Carnegie International Exhibition.  This triennial event features contemporary artists from around the world.  There was lots to see and think about.  The group also made a stop at  the warhol before leaving Pittsburgh.  Special thanks to Priscilla Roggenkamp for coordinating this great trip.

Fears (and Costumes) on Display October 31 in the Coburn Gallery

Start your Halloween night right by joining us in the Coburn Gallery for a Halloween Costume Ball and the opening of our new exhibit, "Drawing on our Fears." The exhibit features artwork from Julie Elman's "Fear Project."  Elman has created a series of more than 125 works of art depicting fears, based on interviews with others. The phobias depicted range from commonly shared fears such as fear of failure or death, to very personal fears such as a fear of centipedes or fears surrounding various diseases.


Read and see more about this innovative project on-line and join us to check it out in person.  "Drawing on Our Fears" will be at the Coburn Gallery from October 31 through November 22.  The opening reception on Halloween Day will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 6:30 p.m. Yes, there will be prizes, so plan your costumes now!

Coburn Gallery's current exhibition "Variable Vessels" runs through October 26 and features a collection of ceramics curated by artist and AU alumnus Matt Schiemann.
