Ashland University alumni Matt Schiemann was featured in a “Studio Visit” article in the January 2014 issue of Ceramics Monthly magazine. He is the son of current Ashland University ceramics instructor Larry Schiemann and was the curator of the Coburn Arts Gallery exhibition “Variable Vessels” this fall.
Matt Schiemann grew up watching and helping his dad Larry create ceramic works. This early exposure taught him to appreciate the handmade object and eventually to choose the field of ceramics for himself. Schiemann received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sculpture and Ceramics from Ashland University in 2005 and his Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2009.
After graduating from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Schiemann was accepted as an artist in residence at the St. Petersburg Clay Co. Shortly afterwards he became an adjunct professor at Eckerd College for PEL program’s ceramics department. In October of 2010, he became co-owner/director of the St. Petersburg Clay Co.
